I don’t understand how, for example, you can get crest toothpaste for free. They usually force you to buy the toothpaste first and then your extra bucks prints out afterward. So in reality you are not getting the toothpaste for free?

Yes, you do have to pay out a bit of cash upfront — but once you do it once, you will be able to use your previous extra bucks on the new purchase so you aren’t paying anything out of pocket.
