When to Buy/In Season:
Season: all year; best supply in September – November

How to Select:
Look for: leeks with white bulb base and fresh green tops, usually trimmed

Organic Issues:
Leeks are prone to the same diseases that attack onions.

EWG 2009 Dirty Dozen, Leeks were not tested, but onions are listed as #47 (least contaminated) for levels of pesticide residues

How to Store:
Fresh:
Store: refrigerate wrapped, use within 3 – 5 days

Frozen:
To Freeze from fresh:

Preparation: Remove tough outer leaves, wash remainder. Cut away green part of stem, slice white flesh or cut in half lengthwise.

Blanch: Blanch 2 minutes if sliced and 3 minutes if cut lengthwise. Chill in iced water 2-3 minutes. Drain and place on tray in a single layer. Freeze for 30 minutes. Transfer to freezer bags, remove air, label and seal.

Store: leeks may be stored in the freezer (0F) up to six months
