Luxury watches and Switzerland, a long history

What do you think when you hear IWC Ingenieur, Rolex or Breitling? Swiss of course! Swiss watchmaking paradoxically owes much to religion and in particular to the austerity of the Calvinists. The reformer Jean Calvin had in fact forbidden the Genevans to wear jewels that he considered contrary to Protestant morality. The jewelers of the city, already recognized for their know-how, had to reconvert themselves so as not to have to put the key under the door. They then circumvented Calvin’s ban by launching into watchmaking. They adorn precious stones watches by making real works of art that were not considered as jewels. The market for luxury watches was born.
